COVID in the home: Cleaning and hygiene tips

Coronaviruses can survive on surfaces for many hours (and some reported to be days) but are readily inactivated by cleaning and disinfection. 

A recent study on how pathogens emerge (James Lloyd’s-Smith, Assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, University of California, Los Angeles) found that viruses can survive on:

• Hard surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours.

• Cardboard for up to 24 hours

• Copper for up to 4 hours

• Hard surfaces are more friendly to pathogens than cloth or rough surfaces.
